George Clooney must really like the way he looks in black & white. Why else would he sign on to a classy-looking drama directed by old friend Steven Soderbergh, which gives him the chance to be in love with Cate Blanchett? It’s a mystery.
Actually, it really is – The Good German is a multi-layered drama set in a ruined Berlin just after the Second World War. Clooney is Jake, an American army journo sent to write about the peace in the city. But he gets more than he bargained for when, via his driver (Tobey Maguire), he hooks back up with ex-flame Lena Brandt (Blanchett), only to discover she and her hubbie have got themselves into some trouble. The Americans and the Russians are both involved and soon Jake is up to his eyeballs in a conspiracy.
